Fishing Reports 2017

Saltwater Fishing Report for the week ending March 06, 2014

Provided courtesy of Tyee Marine.

Salt water fishing for Chinook has been very good this winter, between occasional spells of stormy weather. Some of the best fishing is occurring right now, with the Georgia Strait Herring spawn underway. There are three hot spots at the south end of Quadra Island that hold most of the fish at this time of year. When the tide is flooding through Discovery Passage, the area between Willow Point and Shelter Point has been fishing very well. During the late winter months of February and March, this is a top to bottom fishery with anglers experiencing success from top water bucktailing to trolling as deep as 250 feet.

The Cape Mudge light and the Hump fish best on the ebb tide. The best fishing method is to drop your gear into the water at the southern most end of your planned drift, and fish in the direction of the current in a northerly direction, pulling your up gear just to the north of the Lighthouse and repeating the process.

Halibut fishing since the surprise February season opening has been building, with reports of quite a few being caught incidentally while salmon fishing. The prime time for Halibut locally is from late April to early July, but they are caught all summer.

During the winter, flasher and hoochie combinations are the most popular tackle choice. Many anglers have been using herring or anchovies as well. Small spoons like the Coyote and Kingfisher spoons as well as Tomic plugs work well in the clearest water of the year.
