GOLF COURSES
Playing the Greens
Set amidst the beautiful backdrop of the mountainous ranges to the
east and west, north central Vancouver Island boasts some of the
finest golf courses in the nation and enough variety for all levels.
Storey Creek Golf Course
Course Rating: 72.4 Slope: 131
Storey Creek Golf Course, designed by Les Furber & Associates, is
truly a "course in nature." Carved out of the dense, mixed-growth
forest just south of Campbell River, this 18-hole championship course
receives a four-star award from Golf Digest's Places to Play. The
society that runs the course has gone to great lengths to ensure that
the course lives up to its billing and their conservation efforts
have included regenerating spawning habitat for salmonids around the
course.
Numerous deer graze the fairways, and excellent drainage,
irrigation and grooming make the course play well throughout the
year. The back tee boxes play 6700 yards, but the four tee boxes on each
hole make the course manageable for most levels. However, be aware of
#12, an intimidating hole that requires careful shot placement and
will punish your score should you stray to the right. No two holes
play the same and the five par 3's and five par 5's are interesting.
The course is considered among the best in British Columbia and a
favourite of all who visit.
